An essay is a collection of paragraphs, organized much like and individual paragraphs with an introductions, a body, and a conclusion. 

A five paragraph essay consist of the following parts:

1. Introductions paragraph: hook, connecting ideas, thesis statement (with point of development).

2. First body paragraph: topic sentences, supporting details, concluding or transitional sentence. 

3. Second body paragraph: topic sentences, supporting details, concluding or transitional sentence. 

4. Third body paragraph: topic sentences, supporting details, concluding or transitional sentence. 

5. Concluding paragraph: Restatement of thesis and points of development; suggestion, opinion, or prediction. 


The writing process

Step 1: Choose a topic. 

1. choose a something familiar. 

2. choose something that you are interested in and want to learn about. 

Step 2: Brainstorm. 

Step 3: outline

What is the purpose of the essay? describe something? compere two things? show cause and effect? argue a point? 

Thesis statement: it states the topic and gives a preview of how the information in the essay is presented. 

Examples:

Implied thesis: the main points are not stated. 

buying a car is not as easy as it sound because there are many factors to consider. 

Stated thesis: the main points are clearly stated in the thesis statement. 

buyers should keep in mind many factores when purchasing a car: price, gas mileage, and functionality. 

Step 4: write the first draft

Introductory paragraph: hook, connecting information, and thesis statement.

Body paragraph: give supporting sentences: describe, give reasons, to give facts, to give examples, or to explain. 

Concluding paragraph: the purpose is to recap or summarize for the reader the main idea of the essay. 

Step 5: get feedback from a peer

Step 6: Revise the first draft

Step 7: proofread the final draft

improve clarity, show the relationship between ideas, improve the flow of the essay or connects paragraphs.
